BMW Makes a $12.3 Million Investment and Demos 3D Printed S1000RR Sport Bike

In the latest BMW motorcycle technology news, the BMW Group just recently invested $12.3 million into the Additive Manufacturing Campus located in Germany. This investment will mean BMW and BMW Motorrad will always be on the forefront of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing. 3D printing, as opposed to traditional manufacturing techniques, allow for a design to essentially come straight from a computer into reality. This manufacturing technique cuts down on waste and allows for new designs not possible otherwise.

As a preview of what’s to come in terms of BMW Motorrad news, BMW Motorrad has been showing off its 3D-printed BMW S1000RR sports bike chassis. While this is not yet a markable product, the organic-looking 3D-printed frame and swingarm are weight-saving yet strong and indicative of what may be in store for the next generation of BMW motorcycles.

History of the BMW S1000RR

Initially created in 2009, the BMW S1000RR was made to race in the Superbike World Championship but has since been entered into numerous championships. You might remember that in 2014, TT history was made by Michael Dunlop when he took home four wins while riding the S1000RR as part of BSB team Hawk Racing. Then, in 2015 and 2016, Peter Hickman won in the Macau Grand Prix with his BMW S1000RR as well.

The net weight of the 2016 BMW S1000RR was 458 pounds. That included all the lubricants, battery and fuel. As a comparison, the race version only had a net weight of 357 pounds. With the help of 3D printing, the bike’s weight could be reduced even further thereby optimizing rideability.

Future of Motorcycles

Since the 3D printed version of the S1000RR demonstration occurred, there’s been a lot of talk about the future of motorcycles. With this model, topology optimization, powder-based selective laser technology and generative design were all utilized to create a lightweight, organic bike. It is exciting to see what the future holds for motorcycles with all of this new technology at play.
