Enduro Champion Dirk Thelen Crushes Trails with a BMW F850 GS

There’s no doubting that Dirk Thelen is capable of setting the bar on any trail he sets out to conquer. The same was true when he was faced with the four-day Enduro d’Agadir. Filled with sandy terrain, rocky gravel and clay mud, this four-time Enduro champion pushed through with the help of his BMW F850 GS.

Trials to Overcome

In the North African region of Morocco, the Anti-Atlas mountains glow red as the sun rises. This is something Dirk Thelen recalls about the landscape he set out to overthrow. While he has had many memories of other races he’s been in, this time has been slightly different. Dirk has always faithfully shown up with his BMW motorcycle, whether it be an F 650 GS or an HP 2 Enduro, but this time he brought the F 850 GS to the stage which is an icon of BMW enduro bikes.

Not only did Dirk have to battle the terrain, but the weather wasn’t doing him any favors either. With temperatures just shy of 50 degrees and a constant rain during the first couple of days, riding on the trails was somewhat unpredictable. At one point, the water from a small stream quickly became a rushing torrent that came close to touching his seat bench.

What Dirk Loves about the F 850 GS

If anyone knows BMW Motorrad off-roading bikes, it’s Dirk Thelen. He praises the F 850 GS for its superior tracking stability, the powerful engine and the ability to drive straight ahead while precisely steering at the same time. He is also a fan of the slipper clutch that is new, the low leverage forces and the huge 21-inch front tire.
