BMW’s New HP4 RACE Bike is Absolutely Bonkers

HP4 Race Track Motorcycle

When BMW’s carbon fiber HP4 RACE bike was announced last year, we were expecting something wilder than we’ve ever seen. We knew in November that the HP4 RACE would have a fully carbon fiber frame, but weight and power specs were still tightly under wraps. Now that full details have come out, this bike has exceeded our expectations in every way. The curtain has been pulled off and what was under it is truly spectacular.

HP4 RACE Engine Pushes the Limits

Let’s start with the engine. The HP4 lifts the limits on what was previously thought possible in a BMW superbike and the high-revving 215-horsepower engine is a central part of that accomplishment. This engine puts out about 16 horsepower more than the engine in the S 1000 RR, the bike platform upon which the HP4 RACE is based. The HP4 RACE revs higher, too, up to 14,500 rpm compared to the 14,200 rev limit of the S 1000 RR. To put the 88.5 lb.-ft. of torque to good use, a six-speed gearbox uses Dynamic Traction Control, Wheelie Control and Launch Control for maximum grip and minimal slip.

A Featherlight Frame Helps Squeeze Every Drop of Performance

That amount of power is meaningless without the right weight-to-power ratio, so the HP4 RACE will use a fully carbon fiber frame that weighs in at just 17 lbs., about in the range of what a mountain bike weighs. The carbon fiber frame and carbon fiber wheels of the HP4 Race are industry firsts for a production bike and reduce the overall weight of the HP4 Race to just 377 lbs.

When seconds on the racetrack count, it’s incredibly important that every control component is world class and built to exacting standards. That’s why the HP4 RACE uses MotoGP-spec Brembo brakes and Öhlins suspension. The bike’s aerodynamics, the last piece of the performance puzzle, are improved through the use of a self-supporting carbon front that conquers headwind and channels it into the ram air intake.

Just 750 HP4 RACE bikes will be produced and each one will be handmade by BMW Motorrad performance specialists. Every single bike is tested, certified and can be customized to its owner’s preferred handlebar and footrest placement. If you’re lucky enough to nab one, you can truly count yourself among an exclusive club of owners of one of the most impressive performance bikes on the planet.
