Whereas motorcycle sales overall have had a slump so far this year, it is a completely different story at BMW Motorrad. The prestige German bikemaker has made record sales during the first six months of 2017, shipping almost 90,000 bikes, representing a 9.5% increase compared with the first half of last year. This marks BMW Motorrad’s fifth-consecutive year of sales growth, with 2017 set to be the best year ever for sales.
The brand attributes its sales successes mostly to its R1200GS model and also its Aventure variant that accounted for around an 18% increase in sales, with 17,179 bikes sold. BMW has also raised the stakes in the sector with its retro-modern R NineT upping the ante.
The majority of sales have been in Europe apart from in the UK which recorded a 14% reduction in sales, mainly due to a decline in both car and motorcycle purchases nationwide. Naturally, Germany is the brand’s biggest marketplace and where most of the sales are concentrated as can be expected. In America sales increased by a modest 3.8% and due to the immensity of the US market, which gives BMW a great foothold in the states as other bike manufacturers see stalling sales.
Like its cars, the BMW brand has developed a signature look to its motorcycles that has risen in popularity considerably in the past five years. Many brands do not compare with BMW when it comes to practicality and all-round performance.
