South African Team Wins BMW GS Trophy 2018

For the second consecutive time, the South African team is the BMW GS Trophy winner. This year’s competition, held in Central Asia in Mongolia, featured a long list of expert riders from all around the world.

Triple points were awarded to teams on the final day of the competition at the “Monster Trial” Special Stage. The triple points allowed for all riders to influence their team’s ranking in a big way. Although it also left room for extra pressure to do well and to not make mistakes.

This trial included three mini-specials, which called for riders to ride through a windy, narrow path, to walk their bikes through a slalom course, backward down a hill and to ride inside a marked square. A variety of penalties were applied for dropping the bike or touching markings, making this trial extremely challenging.

While many of the teams were very successful during this trial, ultimately, the South African Team did the best in the competition overall.

“Our strategy was slow is smooth, and smooth is fast — and it worked in this case,” Mark Dickinson, no. 221 in Team South Africa, said.

About the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy

The International GS Trophy is a competition that brings BMW motorcycle riders to compete in a variety of challenging races and trials. Riders from all over the world participate to win. BMW Motorrad has organized the GS Trophy every two years since 2008.

Motorcycles ridden in the 2018 International GS were the R1200 GS Adventure Rallye, R1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 GS.
