BMW Motorrad has been producing many awesome rides for years, and the BMW R 18 M and the BMW R 18 Aurora are no different. This year, the motorcycle manufacturing giant unveiled the customization projects to Italian and European enthusiasts in Verona, Italy. These two projects are based on the iconic and exotic BMW R 18.
BMW Motorrad Italy handled the projects in conjunction with some of the biggest historical players of the world. These are the Italian LowRide magazine, American Dreams, and Garage 221.
This motorcycle has M in its name, which means it’s a sportbike. The LowRide magazine staff developed the idea for this bike to give the BMW Cruiser a sportier and streamlined look with reference to the iconic BMW R 18 retro lines.
“Stability, long wheelbase, and readiness of the 1800 cc big boxer instigate lightning starts and deserve, in our opinion, a sporty and retro look. In the R 18 M design, we find suggestions from BMW Motorrad tradition and cues from the four-wheelers: M stands for Motorsport”, Giuseppe Roncen, the director of LowRide, stated when he was describing the project.
During the presentations at EICMA 2019, Garage 221 got the idea to create a BMW motorcycle based on the iconic BMW R 18 retro lines. Still, it wasn’t until recently that the concept became a reality. The result of this idea is a new bike that’s elegant, faithfully traditional, yet very innovative. In the opinions of Pier Francisco Marchio of Garage 221, the new cruiser deserves “complementary elements and an even more Heritage spirit, starting from the soft lines of the tank to the characteristic shapes of the boxer.”
The project’s initial focus was to study the bike sections while adding new elements and taking inspiration from the BMW cruisers of the 1970s. Garage 221’s experience working on BMW motorcycles led to the BMW R 18 Aurora. Indeed, all the bike elements are from different models of BMW Motorrad. The saddle was inspired by the BMW 1200 C of 2005.
